Description Weak stomachs, don't fret. This isn't bloody. Ironic right? But I saw this movie in school and found the subtleties of the behind the scenes intrigue so much more compelling than the arena gore-fest. *Spoilers* Joaquin Phoenix is revoltingly brilliant in his supporting role as the deranged emperor Commodus, who murders his father when he learns that Marcus Aurelius intends to leave the empire under the control of his favorite general Maximus, with the intention of restoring Rome to a republic. The Senators are in agreement but Commodus has other plans. He orders Maximus {Russel Crowe) to be executed and seizes control as a dictator hoping to win the love of his people. His plans are thwarted when Maximus returns as a gladiator and warily forms an alliance with the senators and the Commodus's sister, Lucilla (Connie Nielson), with the sole intent of bringing the emperor down.
